When Words Are Many  ©2009 Jim Yackel

Proverbs 10:19 says: When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. This colossal glittering jewel of truth is a series of words in which to live by.

Talk by itself is cheap. When talk is supported by truth and is backed up with substantive action, it is no longer cheap but instead carries great value. But, as Proverbs 10:19 says, "he who holds is tongue is wise." As I carry forth in my Christian walk through this earthly life, I am learning that it can by wise to hold my tongue.

Jim's View: Weekly column written by Christian Rock singer songwriter recording artist Jim Yackel

We as Christians are called to be bold witnesses to our faith. We should speak out at every opportunity about what we believe in an effort to bring more of the lost to the cross -- or should we? I believe that in many situations it is better to talk softly and carry a big cross.

Too large a segment of this current society and culture are too willing to brand true believers in Jesus Christ as "freaks" and "weirdoes." We are labeled as "closed minded" (by their definition I certainly am) and "archaic." We are often despised and made mockery of. In the eyes of some, we are downright scary! Certainly, it has been this way since Jesus walked with the disciples, but as the world moves forward into the End Times more hearts are growing cold as Satan is waging an all-out campaign against the work of the Holy Spirit that indwells us. The evil one is using popular culture and the media as his primary weapons. Unfortunately, too many people believe everything they see on T.V.

Sometimes, there is absolutely nothing we can say to the hard-hearted that would turn them in the direction of Jesus. So many are swallowed up in this fallen world pursuing material wealth, social status, the buzz of booze and dope and the pleasures of the flesh. If you approach this type of person and say "Howdy fray-end, dew yew know Jah-yeeeesus?" you will be considered an idiot -- or worse -- and the seed that you would hoped would instantaneously grow into a tree bearing Christian fruit will instead be washed away in a torrential rain of ridicule and animosity. People of this world at large in 2009 are often vicious and impenetrable.

Now, look, folks -- I am not advising to keep your jaws wired shut and to never speak of our Lord and Savior. What I am encouraging is the reliance on discernment when you are amongst the potentially militant non-believing. We need to let our walks speak louder than our talks. The Apostle Paul spelled it out well for us in Galatians chapter 5, verses 22-24:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

Let the world see your love, your joy, your peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. As the Holy Spirit takes root in you, these elements will manifest themselves outwardly and others -- even those with ice cubes in their ventricles -- will see them. Look, folks, I know it's not always easy to do, and this writer struggles with it as well. But, you can do it! And, your actions WILL speak louder than words. When the hard-hearted comment on or ask why you are the way you are, THEN you can tell them it's because of Jesus! This will not guarantee a 100% success rate, but when people see this kind, gentle, patient, joyful and good-natured individual who then gives credit to whom it is due, you will stack the odds in the favor of successful soul-winning.

We can pray for wisdom and discernment and learn to feel out individual situations. In some instances, direct conversation about the Lord will be most effective. But when you are in the workplace or amongst those who obviously would appear to be disinterested in the faith, you may have to first manifest outwardly the fruit of the Spirit. Manifesting these fruits should be a normal part of who we are anyway. When manifesting the fruits becomes natural for us, our witness becomes that much more effective. It will encourage those around us to want some of what we've got!

In Christ's Service,

Jim
